Everyone deserves to have someone in their life to look up to, no matter how tall they grow. Make no mistake, great role models come in all shapes and sizes. You may have an older brother, a friend, uncle, boss, or mentor, who has the same effect as the worlds best dad. Father’s day is not about DNA, its about thanking those who makes a difference in your life. What day of the year is a more opportune time to show thanks for all the men out there who are responsible for teaching us right from wrong, giving us the courage to be ourselves, and the motivation to chase our dreams. Looking for a way to show your gratitude? Think smart.
Do-it-yourself.
If there’s one thing your dad may have taught you, its might be how to work with your hands. What you should remember however, is to make him a gift he will use and not a novelty item that will likely end up in the back of the closet for the next few years. Combining memory and functionality is a sure way to win his heart. Things like grilling plates with handprints on them, pictures of your most memorable trips framed, or a one-of-a-kind Cuban playlist (If that’s his thing) for his Ipod will go a long way. Think about what he likes and incorporate it to make the most of your gift. Pinterest has a lot of great DIY projects with instructions from those who’ve attempted it themselves.
Spend Time together.
Don’t take the time you have to make memories with your dad for granted. Plan a trip somewhere, take a weekend hike, or make lunch plans. Life can become so busy and its easy to put relationships on the backburner, especially when you have a family of your own. Pick up the phone and call your dad just to say hello. Send a funny email to let him know you’re thinking of him. There’s a lot of in between times throughout the day that could be put to better use. Take those moments and use them to strengthen your relationships.
Say what you mean.
We often save the mushy-gushy talk for our moms and hand a funny card to our dads because we think he doesn’t need the emotional part. While they may not need it, it will always feel nice to know how much they’re loved, appreciated and thought of. Who wouldn’t want to know that all of their sacrifices and hard work are noticed by the ones they do it for. Avoid the cheesy cards and say what you mean. If you can’t say it on Fathers day when can you?
