A new year is 365 more chances to change your life. It’s that time of year when we find ourselves looking back on the past and thinking about things we would like to do differently next year. There is always room for improvement. So here are a few popular new years resolutions along with an idea of how to achieve them if they are on your list!
Meet new people!
Social interaction is healthy for the body and mind, but a lot of us get stuck in our comfort zones and end up missing out on opportunities to meet new people and network. The next time you are faced with a decision to go out or stay in, remember that door #1 will always be there. However door #2 is a unique opportunity that can never be duplicated. You never know who you will you meet, and how important they might be in your life going forward. Facing uncertainty is what strengthens character, and opens the doors for future opportunities.
Get in shape!
Being physically healthy lowers your risk of disease and sickness, and builds confidence. Contrary to what people think, getting in shape is not a 1-step process that provides results in a week or two. Long-term effects take long-term commitments. A healthy lifestyle means eating right, exercising, and watching what you put in your body all year round. The best thing about it? There are a million and one ways to succeed, all you need is a system that works for you and your lifestyle. Like most things in life, you get what you give.
Save more money!
For a lot of people, saving, spending, and borrowing is a constant battle, but every day is an opportunity to get back on the right track. In the building blocks of life you cannot get to the top unless you have built a strategic foundation. Spending has to be managed properly so that debts can be paid off quickly, and savings can start adding up. If you don’t address the root of the problem, the cycle will continue and further your debt. It’s never too late to learn how to budget.
Volunteer and give more to charity!
We are happiest when we give to others and that’s a fact. Giving to charity and volunteering sound like a big commitment and can be intimidating to those who don’t know how to get the ball rolling. The truth is that we volunteer and give charity all the time without realizing it. Every time you hold the door open for someone, buy coffee for a friend, or donate a shirt to goodwill, you are helping others. If you want to give more, do more tiny acts of kindness that affect people every day.
Become more self-reliant!
You cannot begin to help others until you have learned to help yourself. As an adult you are responsible for your own happiness, and your own well being. That means learning how to provide and sustain the lifestyle you choose. When we depend on others too much in any type of relationship, whether a close friend, significant other, or parent, we give them the power to decide our future for us, resulting in blame, resentment, and ruined relationships. The more you do for yourself, the more your life will be a product of your own choices and the happier you will be. So get your license, go back to school, learn to manage your finances; do what you need to do to ensure you have the life you envisioned for yourself.
If these resolutions weren’t on your list its not too late to add them!
We can all aim to be a litter better, walk a little taller, and talk a little louder this year.
Happy New year!
